WELCOME to my BLOG

Hi there!

I’m slowly working towards some simplicity within the home, but hey! It’s a lot of hard work!

I love having a go at growing my own veges and always use herbs fresh from my garden. I try to plant from seed whenever I can and have learnt to save and share my own seed for the following year. I make Award Winning preserves and pickles; and my husband brews Award Winning boutique beers as well. I love to stockpile and try to limit quick trips to the shops. I dabble in bread making and enjoy making my own stocks too.

I enjoy feeding my family good hearty meals, nothing like those tiny restaurant stacks you have to look for on the plate. My husband maintains our vehicles and machinery and we both enjoy fabricating on a small scale mostly relying on metal & timber recyclers for any materials needed.

While I don’t always have time to reply to comments, I love reading them. I hope you enjoy your stay and I hope you learn something new because I love sharing what I learn, and I'm always looking for another new skill myself.

Cheers!

Dehydrated Apple

I use dehydrated apple as a snack, and this time my DS19 reminded me that we had run out....I still had some of the huge apples in store, so dehydrated apple was another thing on the list for the weekend just passed.

Before drying; I dunk the sliced apple in Pineapple Juice
This stops it oxidising (going brown).

Half of the small jar is already gone in the Rock Cakes I made.
Do you own a dehydrator? If not, would you consider buying one? What would you like to dry in it?

  1. We just bought a big dehydrator but have yet to use it. I mainly wanted it because of the summer stone fruit glut. Hubby wants to try beef jerky!

I should get some apples and dry them! Thank you for sharing about the pineapple juice.

  2. Hi Nelly Mary

    Gosh, you've been busy.

I've got a dehydrator and to tell you the truth, I've never used it. A dear friend gave it to me last year and I've been wanting to use it. I've got a glut of apples in the fridge so I might do some dehydrated apple. Do you think dipping in lemon juice would be okay instead of the pineapple?

    Thanks,
    Anne

  3. Good for you Tania, now is a perfect time to put down some dried apple.....

Anne, I used to use lemon juice, but I found it a bit tart to the finished apple.....you can use it but be quick in tossing the apple around in the lemon juice....I think I soaked it back then.
I love dried beef jerky...It's so easy and the thinner you slice the beef, the quicker it dries. I have a huge jar of it in my store at the moment...but have to keep hiding it, as the kids keep finding it. They would eat it all in a few days if I let them....Can't blame them though, it really is yummy.

  5. I love my dehydrator. Mine is a square one with lots of space but I still need another one since we grow in large volume. I picked up a tip that you might like Place your juice in a squirt bottle rather than in a bowl. Spray the fruit. I actually don't have a problem with browning but that is because our apple tree yields very sour apples I think. Pears seem to need the citrus/ juice bath the most. I've not pretreated any other fruits and have had great results.
