Hi there!

I’m slowly working towards some simplicity within the home, but hey! It’s a lot of hard work!

I love having a go at growing my own veges and always use herbs fresh from my garden. I try to plant from seed whenever I can and have learnt to save and share my own seed for the following year. I make Award Winning preserves and pickles; and my husband brews Award Winning boutique beers as well. I love to stockpile and try to limit quick trips to the shops. I dabble in bread making and enjoy making my own stocks too.

I enjoy feeding my family good hearty meals, nothing like those tiny restaurant stacks you have to look for on the plate. My husband maintains our vehicles and machinery and we both enjoy fabricating on a small scale mostly relying on metal & timber recyclers for any materials needed.


While I don’t always have time to reply to comments, I love reading them. I hope you enjoy your stay and I hope you learn something new because I love sharing what I learn, and I'm always looking for another new skill myself.

Another Community Garden & other bits

Hey there....I often wonder how my readers are going? I share so much here with my blog...but often wonder what others are up to. Today both my husband and myself went along to the recently organised Albion Park Community Garden; to show our support while they build their very first compost pile. What a lovely bunch of people! While it's early days yet, and they don't have any garden beds built yet, they have reclaimed a garden that was already there. I took along a tray of seedlings and plants to add to their garden.

While lots of things are happening around here, I don't always have time to write about them. So here are a few chosen bits and pieces.

  1. Hi, here in The Netherlands the garden season is just beginning again. I hqave planted up a container with primroses. It really makes me smile. I have started to bake bread and have enjoyed that a lot too. Just got a new oven, a gift from my parents for our 25th wedding anniversary in May ; )
    It is so great to be able to bake again. My old oven didn't give good results anymore and that was pretty frustrating.

  2. Hi, I am in Texas USA. I have been sprouting, and preparing my garden. Buying stones to surround my garden to make it easier to contain the grass, weeds and fire ants. Trying out new recipes with foods I have grown. Getting the chemicals balanced in my above ground pool for summer swimtime. Cleaning it many times because of falling leaves in the wind. Considering using unused backyard areas for more garden growing space. Thinking of making one spot for flowers, then with more garden zones I can rotate crops easier. Still collecting many geen from garden boxes. My compost pile after a year has been my biggest money saver for feeding my greens during the winter and preparing new soil for this year.

  3. Love the community compost project and the photos make me feel as though I am there!!

    For my projects-we have been replacing our roof, as we had a huge micro burst that took out some parts.

    We are getting ready to get into spring gardening as our winter is nearly over. We are in the midst of lambing season, as well as kidding season(no kidding-goat kids!)

    So we are gearing up for our out of doors season!

  4. How nice! We have a very mild winter here in Delaware, usa. Many of my flowers from the summer did not even die-off. (Hoping that doesn't hurt them...I think a good frosty winter is good). Right now, I'm mostly enjoying the birds, as it is too early to plant....still another month and a half to two months away. love,andrea

  5. Lots of preserving round here and a pear tree to pick next door for yet more preserves and hopefully some juice too. Apples for jelly picked and a garden to tidy up for winter.

  7. Hi, this is my first post, though I've been lurking & enjoying your blog for a while now. :-)
    I have only got a few herbs in at the moment - chives, parsely, oregano and comfrey. Oh and a potted lemon tree. My no-dig garden bed is under construction - one more nice thick layer of compost and a topping of mulch and it will be right to go for the new seasons veg.
    Your community graden pics are great. Looks like a terrific and useful day. I went to look at my local community garden today and was pretty disappointed to find multiple rows of rosemary, lavender, curry plant and aloe vera taking up nearly all the space. There is very little else, just a few yummy looking basil plants and some mint and some grape vines on wires. It seemed to me to be sadly lacking in more useful food plants. I would like to volunteer there but feel it would be rude, as a newcomer, to want to make changes.... (sorry about the gripe.)

  8. So, in Arkansas, we've had a pretty mild winter. Daffodils were breaking earth at Christmas and have been in bloom a few weeks. Trees are leafing out. I had started some lasagna type beds last winter, but fell a little short on materials. Still, it's progress. A friend has opened a flea-market type store and I've done some homemade items for her inventory. Sewing is good during the winter. As it warms up, I'll spend more time outside working in the yard or my small garden. And we have awesome hiking trails around here, some better for cold weather, some for the warm seasons. Oh, and I'm hoping for a good river float in June.

    I so much enjoy your garden pix, especially during our off-season.
